https://roothy.com.au CUSTOM GU PATROL - Roothy So what's the best four wheel drive to build up into a monster family rock hopper? There's plenty to choose from and a whole lot of ways to go, but you've got to go a long way to best a Nissan Patrol, especially the GU's. No wonder they're so popular both in Australia and across the world. Times have changed and nowadays we have a lot more products and companies to choose from but get a load of this GU built by Aaron. After all, when you've got a good thing, you can make it better with another five inches... RUST PROOF MAHINDRA - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au RUST PROOF MAHINDRA - Roothy Before going anywhere at all, with only 140km on the clock, the new Mahindra is up on the hoist and getting some attention. This is the first in a series of clips where Roothy's showing us what his bushmechanic brain says should be done to achieve the longest life out of a new vehicle. Mind you, it's all an adventure because John's never owned a new vehicle other than a couple of motorbikes which he's still got 44 and 37 years later anyway. Tight bastard. It took him a couple of years of borrowing new vehicles and testing them to find what fits him and as usual he's going against the usual choices, branching out and trying something different. Anyone who's driven bush tracks with him will recognise that approach! Hang in and we'll see how this Mahindra works in the Aussie outback. TASSIE'S TOURING SECRETS - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au TASSIE'S TOURING SECRETS - Roothy The thing about Tasmania’s coast is that the weather can turn extreme any time and with minimal warning. Most of the time that’ll just make a few days of the trip more adventurous but it can get very miserable if you’re not prepared with wet weather gear, warm clothes, decent shelter and a big bottle of rum. The summer months from Christmas through to March are the best times to travel with February being the usual winner in the warmth/no rain stakes. Long days – the sun sets very slowly this far from the equator – really help you make a mile and find a good camp site too. The downside of summer travelling is that that’s when tourists flock to the island, clogging up the cafes and shops in the more popular, trendy places. Don’t worry though, they rarely venture off the beaten track, exactly where you’ll be spending most of your time! Forget winter unless you’re extremely adventurous and travelling with locals who know their stuff. The fact is that blizzards, dense fog and snow falls are pretty routine in a Tassie winter and apart from being uncomfortable, you’ll risk getting permanently stuck somewhere if the rivers suddenly come up. Huge tree trunks pushed forty or more feet up the banks of steep river gullies pretty much say it all! Driving Conditions - OK all you solo tough guys, the drill for successful trips through Tassie coast’s tougher tracks is simple – travel in company! This applies to most of the tracks we’ve mentioned here especially if there’s been some rain and on Tasmania’s coast the odds are it’ll rain once or twice a week even in summer. If you’re going to invest in good mud tyres, do it before you go happy in the knowledge that you won’t be doing huge miles on sealed roads when there’s so many tracks beckoning! Most of the serious local off-roaders own a winch at the very least while spades, hi-lift jacks, snatch straps and the usual complement of recovery gear will almost always get a work out. Trees falling across tracks in the forest country are common so it pays to keep an axe and a tow rope handy too. Be aware that carrying a chainsaw can be an offence in some of the Parks and Wildlife reserves. Note too that the same office bound bureaucrats and so called ‘environmentalists’ who wouldn’t know a tree stump from a pencil are wielding their pathetic paper swords over the future of off-roading in Tasmanian too. Local 4WD clubs have responded by putting countless hours into track maintenance and preservation and wherever possible try to do your part to make sure their efforts aren’t in vain. NEW MAHINDRA - what Roothy got.

https://roothy.com.au Mahindra's man in charge of pre-delivery and fitting out vehicles is long serving veteran of the vehicle industry Tony Costley. Whenever you order a new vehicle you get a few choices and Mahindra is no exception. So in the ordering phase Roothy had some decisions to make - what's an old bushmechanic choose when he's thinking about a vehicle to last him out? Check this out. And don't believe it'll stay like this for long.... MY MAHINDRA getting the keys! - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au MY MAHINDRA getting the keys! - Roothy Finally she's arrived! Ankit Taneja, the National Manager of Mahindra Australia, made a personal trip out to the holding yard to 'present' me with the keys. IT'S A MAHINDRA! - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au IT'S A MAHINDRA! - Roothy After a couple of years of testing new four wheel - and one two wheel - drive vehicles with a view to buying one, I finally made a decision. Yes, it's unusual but in a world gone tech mad somebody's got to step outside conventions and prove what was really a gut feeling based on a the feel of the Pik Up I borrowed. I've learnt a lot from this process and there's going to be a lot more to learn. I guess the big question is what happens when a bloke who's spent his life rebuilding old machines and then squeezing maximum mileage from them finally starts with a new truck? First, don't expect it to be looked after like any other new vehicle. Second, don't expect it to stay stock. It's out up or shut up as far as I;m convened so here goes a new chapter in my machinery life. Stay tuned - we're in for a ride! TRIUMPH SCRAMBLER 1200 - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au TRIUMPH SCRAMBLER 1200 - Roothy When it first came out a couple of yars ago, I wanted one straight away. This has got to be one of the best looking new motorcycles ever released and to ride one, well, it just gets better! Right now it's number one potential new bike purchase for me - although there's a little problem clearing that with the Handbrake.... As its name suggests, the Street Scrambler is based on Triumph’s entry-level retro bike. That means it already boxes well above its weight with a punchy 900cc ‘High Torque’ parallel-twin engine, slick running gear, quality fit and finish, great roadholding and an overall sense that the bike shrinks around you. Like its sibling, the Street Scrambler is an outstanding, thoroughly engineered modern motorcycle that just happens to be draped in taut, semi-retro styling. That visual simplicity and attention to detail we’ve become familiar with is all there, too. That includes hiding its ugly modernity, including the catalytic converter, oxygen sensor, brake fluid reservoirs and radiator coolant bottle and associated plumbing. In tight spaces and stop-start crawls, the Street Scrambler takes it all in its stride. It’s nimble, neutral and its generous steering lock gives a nice, tight turning circle. It’s simply easy. Likewise, it’s easy when you bank it over through bends thanks to its easy ergonomics and high, wide ’bars for leverage. I had the opportunity to compare the old with the new at the launch of the Street Scrambler and, although it offered a nostalgic experience, the technological advances of the latest bike smack you in the face. It’s considerably less top-heavy (27kg lighter), its lever pull is much lighter, its gearbox is smoother and, thanks to its crisp fuelling and that 900cc engine, its performance can only be described as like night and day. Specifically, the Street Scrambler offers almost 30 per cent more power and torque, and all of it is delivered in the real-world riding range (2750-4750rpm).
