This dvd was made in 2007 when Editor Glenn Wright, an ex-rally driver, decided 4WD Monthly had to do the world's best vehicle testing. So we took all the latest 2007 utes out back for some of the severest flogging ever done. We had plenty of breakdowns and really found what worked and what didn't. They don't test vehicles like this anymore - too much money and influence peddling these days - and even back then 4WD Monthly was only able to get away with it because we were still driven by our copy sales and readers rather than the big companies. Here's the inside drill on real world testing by some of the quickest blokes to ever drive the dirt - in my opinion cars have only got softer since then, mostly because marketing has taken over from engineering.... When Mahindra Australia invited me along to see how they test vehicles before releasing them in the market I had to go along. Any excuse to hit the Red Centre any time, but the testing involves old mates of mine and this is pretty much an Australian first. Sure, lots of companies test their vehicles here in the harshest conditions on the planet but for a company to have enough confidence to invite a journalist was a first. There's nothing like going bush with instructions to go as hard as you can on the vehicle. The automatic was predictably excellent - being made by Aisan, the same company that makes the Hilux 'box - but the way Mahindra have sequenced the changing to the motor's attributes is beautiful. Made in the days before it was trendy to get totally bogged for the cameras, this trip was fully loaded with unusual recoveries and innovative driving tips. Following on from the last Action dvd when Big Red was still a tray back Roothy's already built up a radical rear section based on the old F100 look but not much more. Motor's still a smoky old 2H and it's pretty amazing what it can do regardless of that. You can really see what difference diff locks make because there's none here yet! Meanwhile Manny’s got a lifted Nissan Patrol with 35’s under it, and he reckons he's here to recover Roothy. Brad’s running his home made and seriously lifted Hilux with 32’s, he says he's here’s to recover Manny, but Johno, with his almost stock SWB Suzuki, with 4 tyres anyway, reckons he’ll get us all out! A regular pocket rocket Suzuki Yalwal, once a gold mining area, and still an awesome place to visit.. Lots of recovery action, even breaking out the old Turfor hand winch.
