MAHINDRA first drive - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au MAHINDRA first drive - Roothy Having taken the plunge and gone for the new Mahindra Pik Up, it's time to head out for a bit of running in. Yep, just an excuse to take the Karen camping and maybe run the little truck in gently. No loads, gentle speeds, slow gearchanging and brakes - you know the drill! But being me I can't help having a crack at a little bit of tougher stuff and now even Karen reckons we're going to need to 'make it ours' with a few modifications. Or more than a few. We will see! Got a feeling it'll all grow from here as long as the Mahindra keeps proving itself. Stay tuned - and if you know anything that works from experience I'd love to hear from you. CUSTOM GU PATROL - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au CUSTOM GU PATROL - Roothy So what's the best four wheel drive to build up into a monster family rock hopper? There's plenty to choose from and a whole lot of ways to go, but you've got to go a long way to best a Nissan Patrol, especially the GU's. No wonder they're so popular both in Australia and across the world. Times have changed and nowadays we have a lot more products and companies to choose from but get a load of this GU built by Aaron. After all, when you've got a good thing, you can make it better with another five inches... RUST PROOF MAHINDRA - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au RUST PROOF MAHINDRA - Roothy Before going anywhere at all, with only 140km on the clock, the new Mahindra is up on the hoist and getting some attention. This is the first in a series of clips where Roothy's showing us what his bushmechanic brain says should be done to achieve the longest life out of a new vehicle. Mind you, it's all an adventure because John's never owned a new vehicle other than a couple of motorbikes which he's still got 44 and 37 years later anyway. Tight bastard. It took him a couple of years of borrowing new vehicles and testing them to find what fits him and as usual he's going against the usual choices, branching out and trying something different. Anyone who's driven bush tracks with him will recognise that approach! Hang in and we'll see how this Mahindra works in the Aussie outback. TASSIE'S TOURING SECRETS - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au TASSIE'S TOURING SECRETS - Roothy The thing about Tasmania’s coast is that the weather can turn extreme any time and with minimal warning. Most of the time that’ll just make a few days of the trip more adventurous but it can get very miserable if you’re not prepared with wet weather gear, warm clothes, decent shelter and a big bottle of rum. The summer months from Christmas through to March are the best times to travel with February being the usual winner in the warmth/no rain stakes. Long days – the sun sets very slowly this far from the equator – really help you make a mile and find a good camp site too. The downside of summer travelling is that that’s when tourists flock to the island, clogging up the cafes and shops in the more popular, trendy places. Don’t worry though, they rarely venture off the beaten track, exactly where you’ll be spending most of your time! Forget winter unless you’re extremely adventurous and travelling with locals who know their stuff. The fact is that blizzards, dense fog and snow falls are pretty routine in a Tassie winter and apart from being uncomfortable, you’ll risk getting permanently stuck somewhere if the rivers suddenly come up. Huge tree trunks pushed forty or more feet up the banks of steep river gullies pretty much say it all! Driving Conditions - OK all you solo tough guys, the drill for successful trips through Tassie coast’s tougher tracks is simple – travel in company! This applies to most of the tracks we’ve mentioned here especially if there’s been some rain and on Tasmania’s coast the odds are it’ll rain once or twice a week even in summer. If you’re going to invest in good mud tyres, do it before you go happy in the knowledge that you won’t be doing huge miles on sealed roads when there’s so many tracks beckoning! Most of the serious local off-roaders own a winch at the very least while spades, hi-lift jacks, snatch straps and the usual complement of recovery gear will almost always get a work out. Trees falling across tracks in the forest country are common so it pays to keep an axe and a tow rope handy too. Be aware that carrying a chainsaw can be an offence in some of the Parks and Wildlife reserves. Note too that the same office bound bureaucrats and so called ‘environmentalists’ who wouldn’t know a tree stump from a pencil are wielding their pathetic paper swords over the future of off-roading in Tasmanian too. Local 4WD clubs have responded by putting countless hours into track maintenance and preservation and wherever possible try to do your part to make sure their efforts aren’t in vain. NEW MAHINDRA - what Roothy got.

https://roothy.com.au Mahindra's man in charge of pre-delivery and fitting out vehicles is long serving veteran of the vehicle industry Tony Costley. Whenever you order a new vehicle you get a few choices and Mahindra is no exception. So in the ordering phase Roothy had some decisions to make - what's an old bushmechanic choose when he's thinking about a vehicle to last him out? Check this out. IT'S A MAHINDRA! - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au IT'S A MAHINDRA! - Roothy After a couple of years of testing new four wheel - and one two wheel - drive vehicles with a view to buying one, I finally made a decision. Yes, it's unusual but in a world gone tech mad somebody's got to step outside conventions and prove what was really a gut feeling based on a the feel of the Pik Up I borrowed. I've learnt a lot from this process and there's going to be a lot more to learn. I guess the big question is what happens when a bloke who's spent his life rebuilding old machines and then squeezing maximum mileage from them finally starts with a new truck? First, don't expect it to be looked after like any other new vehicle. Second, don't expect it to stay stock. It's out up or shut up as far as I;m convened so here goes a new chapter in my machinery life. Stay tuned - we're in for a ride! TRIUMPH SCRAMBLER 1200 - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au TRIUMPH SCRAMBLER 1200 - Roothy When it first came out a couple of yars ago, I wanted one straight away. This has got to be one of the best looking new motorcycles ever released and to ride one, well, it just gets better! Right now it's number one potential new bike purchase for me - although there's a little problem clearing that with the Handbrake.... As its name suggests, the Street Scrambler is based on Triumph’s entry-level retro bike. That means it already boxes well above its weight with a punchy 900cc ‘High Torque’ parallel-twin engine, slick running gear, quality fit and finish, great roadholding and an overall sense that the bike shrinks around you. Like its sibling, the Street Scrambler is an outstanding, thoroughly engineered modern motorcycle that just happens to be draped in taut, semi-retro styling. That visual simplicity and attention to detail we’ve become familiar with is all there, too. That includes hiding its ugly modernity, including the catalytic converter, oxygen sensor, brake fluid reservoirs and radiator coolant bottle and associated plumbing. In tight spaces and stop-start crawls, the Street Scrambler takes it all in its stride. It’s nimble, neutral and its generous steering lock gives a nice, tight turning circle. It’s simply easy. Likewise, it’s easy when you bank it over through bends thanks to its easy ergonomics and high, wide ’bars for leverage. I had the opportunity to compare the old with the new at the launch of the Street Scrambler and, although it offered a nostalgic experience, the technological advances of the latest bike smack you in the face. It’s considerably less top-heavy (27kg lighter), its lever pull is much lighter, its gearbox is smoother and, thanks to its crisp fuelling and that 900cc engine, its performance can only be described as like night and day. Specifically, the Street Scrambler offers almost 30 per cent more power and torque, and all of it is delivered in the real-world riding range (2750-4750rpm). MILO'S BROTHER - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au MILO REPLICA? Roothy Over the last twenty years the original Milo I built and rebuilt and rebuilt again a few times - and hen got other people to rebuild bits along the way too! But the old girl certainly influenced a lot of people along the way. Ive seen Milo on everything from cakes to cardboard box cars, posters and wood carvings and - as a model too, a few times over. But the best one was this replica built almost to look exactly like the original. In fact he'd only stopped when it time to cut the back off which was also one of the trickiest parts of the original conversion for me. The hardest part is sourcing the panels to build a 40 wagon because they only ever built station wagon versions in Africa and only a handful of those made it over to Australia. My mate Ecky Stollberg rang me up and said he had the lot in a pile in his backyard - side rear window panels, hinged tailgate and surround. All I had to do was chop another couple of wagon doors to make a bottom talgate and, err, slice the rest up too. Some people have said that chopping the chassis might not have been roadworthy but the proof was in the 800,000kms the old girl did before she retired to the museum. If you ever get to Birdwood in south Australia make sure you check out the original Milo too! She's part of Australia's motoring history. And the replica? I nearly bought it and then it disappeared - someone told me they'd seen it on a farm down south. Maybe.... DODGE RAM REVIEW Roothy

https://roothy.com.au DODGE RAM REVIEW Roothy During my covid spate of new vehicle testing with a view to buying my own first brand new truck a lot of people suggested I try a Dodge Ram. So here you go = a Ram Review - but it's more about the towing capability than anything else because as good and as much fun as the big Dodge is, it's not built for off-road in Australia. I know this from previous experience where the bodys have been barked by tight tracks and tyres have ripped off because we deflated them a bit for traction and the power and weight did the rest. Fact is they're an awesome machine, but definitely not for me. If I was towing a big van though? Or even a medium sized van or horsefloat or something? Lend me your hat partners - I need a Ram! @springwoodausmv #springwoodausmv #scdperformance #scdmanufacturedvehicles #ausmv Facebook: https://ift.tt/1r10yUR Twitter: https://twitter.com/roothy4wd?lang=en Instagram: https://ift.tt/2uCSaSn Pinterest: https://ift.tt/2mhNDki Tumblr: https://ift.tt/2zF1aMp #roothy #roothy4wd #milo2 #terraintamer4wd #maxtrax #frontrunneroutfitters #lanotec #outbackaccessoriesaustralia #blackduckseatcovers #penriteoil #thebushcompany #smartautomotivesolutions #xrox #browndavis #uniden #borntoraom #frontrunneraustralia #toyota4x4 #landcruiser #fj40 #40series #builtnotbought #redarc_electronics #maxtraxhq

THE FIRST VIDEO - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au THE FIRST VIDEO - Roothy Take a trip back in time to the days before 4WD Action when the mag was still known as 4WD Monthly and we were off on our first ever video trip. I was still working as a tour guide back then and the whole filming thing was Pat Callinan's passion. He pushed for it, raised the sponsorship and set something in motion that's still rolling today, albeit in a lot more crowded space as everybody take a camera everywhere! Off we went on a massive trip from The Simpson Desert to Fraser Island and all points bush tracked in between. Milo had just copped her 13BT engine transplant and I was carrying as much cooking gear as tools and parts, because there's nothing like a shake down run half way across a country the size of Australia. Anyway here it is - Australia, big bold and beautiful and just waiting for you to go adventuring too - although life sure was simpler back then before the city based greens realised there was something beyond their cafe latays... JAGUAR 1950 MK5 for sale - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au I'm selling my Jag mk5 - this has been our family car for special events for twenty years. It was built to be completely reliable with a few minor mods like extra fan cooling and sports air cleaners, stainless lined brake cylinders, new wiring, all new rubbers etc etc. A lot of money spent over a lot of years but now the kids have grown we don't use it anymore. It's low mileage - 78,000 - and completely original leather and timber interior, a bit worn in places as you'd expect from a 70 year old car. I didn't want to restore inside, it's too original, but the outside was a different matter. No rust, just sun damage. Get in touch through the comments if you're seriously interested. Otherwise this clip will serve to remind me of what I had. Getting it together was the biggest achievement of my mechanical life. Something I wanted from the age of 10. It feels like you've stepped back into the best part of 1950 and it drives brilliantly. MuX ISUZU TOWING REVIEW Roothy

https://roothy.com.au @westpointisuzu #westpointisuzu #westpointautos #allnewisuzumux #rvsalesqld MuX ISUZU TOWING REVIEW Roothy Righto well the big question is how well does the Isuzu MuX handle it's 3.5 tonne towing capacity? The answer is it's quite amazing. Certainly way better than I thought and this was in a week where there was a Dodge Ram - the ultimate tow truck - getting driven around here too. It's unusual for me to even look at a 2wd vehicle but this was part of the selection process for me - as in, could I handle driving two wheel drive again as an everyday touring and adventure car. The answer is no - I loved driving the MuX and the 2wd version has plenty of advantages including a terrific turning circle but as a PERSONAL choice, I'm too used to 4wd to be able to go back now. As long as there's a dirt track and a mud puddle, I don't want to think I can't go there! 80 SERIES - TOYOTA'S BEST EVER?? Roothy

https://roothy.com.au 80 SERIES - TOYOTA'S BEST EVER?? Roothy When it comes to maintenance my cousin Darcy reckons you don’t touch things until they’re busted. His 80 Series was a case in point. In 200,000km of hard use the poor old thing’s never had more than book servicing from the local dealer and it only got that because Darce planned on trading it on a new model sooner or later. As far as ‘accessories’ goes he kits them out in typically rural fashion, a bull bar built by the local truck engineers and the optional tow kit for the horse float. It’s hard to see the value in a snorkel when you’re used to taking the tractor to town when it rains. That’s been Darcy’s form for the last thirty years – buy a new Toyota ‘for the farm’, pound it silly on the corrugated track to town and then when the thing’s splitting it’s visors, the suspension’s pancaked and the muffler looks like a moonscape, trade it on a newie. No worries when times are good and a bloke’s got chits in for drought assist and flood relief at the same time but a couple of things – called El Nino and John Howard – have pretty much stuffed up life on the land. At least the new Toyota buying part of it anyway. That’s what Darcy told me four years ago when he decided to keep his ’95 for a bit longer. I tried to convince him to spend some money on it back then but apart from a new scented tea bag hanging off the mirror not much changed. Now I’ve got a bit of a personal interest in my cousin’s truck because we borrow it for family holidays and such when a bit more comfort than Milo’s split bench and flap air conditioning can make all the difference. That’s the difference between me sleeping inside the tent or up on the roof rack in the rain… Facebook: https://ift.tt/1r10yUR Twitter: https://twitter.com/roothy4wd?lang=en Instagram: https://ift.tt/2uCSaSn Pinterest: https://ift.tt/2mhNDki Tumblr: https://ift.tt/2zF1aMp #roothy #roothy4wd #milo2 #terraintamer4wd #maxtrax #frontrunneroutfitters #lanotec #outbackaccessoriesaustralia #blackduckseatcovers #penriteoil #thebushcompany #smartautomotivesolutions #xrox #browndavis #uniden #borntoraom #frontrunneraustralia #toyota4x4 #landcruiser #fj40 #40series #builtnotbought #redarc_electronics #maxtraxhq

THREE LEGGED GU PATROL? - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au WINCHING WEEKEND in NSW - Roothy Some weekends are tougher than others - on men and machines! Check out this wil weekend we spent up in the back hills of mid NSW coast. It was an incredible test for everything off-road - and great blokes to do it with too. Yep, Glenno and Jamie back in the early days when I'd get lucky enough to have them along. Watch the LandRover in action - awesome, amazing what they can do. And this GU despite busting a CV - something that can happen to anything with a front locker and a big job - was incredible off road. Kev Smith makes an appearance - and somewhere out there is a Patrol with a missing CV.... 4WD BEACH PREP - MILO2 REFRESH, Roothy

https://roothy.com.au 4WD BEACH PREP - MILO2 REFRESH, Roothy What to do before taking your 4wd beach? Maybe what to do once a year or so just to preserve an old vehicle? Maybe there's lessons here for new vehicles too? Having made a living out of getting stuck on beaches and in mudholes, crawling through snow slush and sucking up desert dust, Roothy has worked out a few techniques for keeping the corrosion out and letting the vehicle last as long as it possibly can. The original Milo retired with over 1 million kms on the original body and chassis/ For the first 200K it was the local scout vehicle, driven on the local beaches and through SEQ bush. Then the rest was done all over Australia. Thirty six years of rough tracks, water crossings, tidal creeks and rocky hills, but when she was retired it wasn't rust damager - although there was plenty - it was metal fatigue that got to everything. Thank you Lanotec Lanolin! The Vikings couldn't have scared the world without you! PARTS TO YOUR DOOR - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au PARTS TO YOUR DOOR - Roothy Covid has kept me off the tracks and in the shed for the best part of a couple of years now but the flip side of that is getting more catch up work done than ever. But the real winner for me has been that Terrain Tamer's online eStoree has proven to be a total winner. For someone who's not flash on computers they've made it easy to select the right parts and then get them delivered direct/ Being TT you know their parts are as good or better than stock and you'll know you can offord them too. No wonder this Aussie family company has been going strong for over fifty years - nobody does it better! 4WD BUILDS - WHAT YOU NEED - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au Wow, isn't this one close to the heart, the old 4WD Build - What You Need argument. In this old custom truck clip from about ten years ago we took a close look at Jason's 2009 Nissan Navara dual cab. Now he wanted a competent vehicle that'd take him and the family wherever they wanted to go, safely and comfortably. So he built the truck up using some off the shelf stuff and some pure custom stuff too. While your choice of brands has changed and the products themselves, the common sense behind Jason's decisions never has. If, like me, you're planning a common sense outback tourer that'll do it all, then this clip is a must see. COFFS HARBOR V8 THUNDER - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au COFFS HARBOR V8 THUNDER - Roothy and Big Red Coffs Harbor, and we met another ‘slap in the face’ situation on this trip, one I’d been seeing more and more often around the tougher four wheel driving corners of our country. Yep, that’s the tyre size line. One particular hill was an incredible gauge for this as you’ll see on the show. Although not incredibly steep or even that difficult, the ground had been softened and because there wasn’t any room on either side of it, the first few vehicles up there pushing bigger tyres had shaped the track to suit. So Red, with her 31” Mickey Thompsons, bagged out on the diffs about thirty metres into it. A Prado, with 33” tyres but a lower belly pan, went a bit further before sitting on a lump with tyres spinning. Along come two trucks with 35” tyres and romper stomper, they drove that hill as easily as the driveway at Government House. Yep, anyone who says ‘size doesn’t matter’ must be talking about beer bellies and not tyre size! Around Coffs it’s often the maker or breaker. Why is that? It seems to me it’s the areas where there’s plenty of active and motivated four wheelers that seem to suffer from the tyre size line first. I guess that’s because as one bloke goes up a size, his mates see the advantage and go up a size or two too. Pretty soon if you want to go driving with the pack you’ve got to have 35” tyres or bigger to have a chance of following anywhere except at the end of a snatch strap. And once a track’s copped a few 35”s, you need that or bigger to make traction. Because you ain't gonna understand the signs around the back of Coffs so you might as well drive out! It’s a little known fact that Coffs Harbour is the result of a spelling mistake in a government bulletin. Back in 1847 Captain John Korff put his ship ‘Brothers’ in to shelter off the southern headland of Coffs for four days as storms ripped across the ocean. He was pretty impressed by the safe harbour he’d found and the area soon became known as ‘Korff’s Harbour’. Then, in 1861, a spello in a gazettal notice saw the area christened Coffs Harbour once and for all. That’s not that exciting but it gives a glimpse into this region’s history that’s essential for understanding the four wheel driving around there. Storms, Mother Nature at her rawest and a sense of confused identity for the few pioneers in the area for the first hundred or so years of white history. Welcome to some of the wildest country on earth, just up the back of beach holiday central and the rest of Australia's population. You got 4wd, or you've missed out. CUSTOM GQ PATROL - Roothy

https://roothy.com.au CUSTOM GQ PATROL - Roothy In the late 1980s. Nissan hit the market with its original coil-sprung GQ Patrol in both a long and short-wheelbase versions. The Patrol was a tough truck from new - I should know, it was the first comfortable and fast Japanese 4wd I ever drove thanks to a mate hitting opal and buying himself a brand new LWB diesel. It was a slug though, with its non turbo diesel motor. The petrols were a bit quicker but thirstier than my mates at an all you can drink wedding. Tough as old boots and super reliable, the best thing was that Australia was Nissan's second biggest market world wide. That meant heaps of them came to our shores, and once our local blokes got stuck into them they quickly realised the mighty GQ was an awesome base for an incredible modified off-roader. Live axles front and rear, coil springs all around, slow steering that could always hold a line no matter what sort of rocks you were jumping over, there's a lot of reasons older Patrols are so popular. Anyway, check out Bogan's radical GQ. I remember seeing this truck in action and thinking wow, that's the way to do a Patrol! Things have changed a lot since then, there's been lots of advances and a heap of changes in the way people do things but one thing never goes out of style - a modified Nissan GQ is an awesome beast off-road. Bogan did most of the fabricating himself and there's heaps of tips here for others wanting to go this hard, Only trouble these days is finding a Patrol that's affordable - and still in one piece! Go hard!
